WHY ARE SEASONAL LOAD AND SPEED RESTRICTONS IMPOSED?
Dickinson County is located on the Western edge of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and is comprised of seven Townships, with a population of 27,472. The Road Commission maintains 177 miles of Primary roads, 358 miles of Local roads and 100 miles of State highways under contract with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT)for a total of 635 miles.
Dickinson County's road system was adopted on April 7th, 1902. There were 2,039 votes that were cast, 1366 in favor and 673 opposed. Since that time the Road Commission has seen many changes. From two-rut roads to County roads and State trunklines; and from horse drawn snowplows to multi purpose trucks and graders.
The majority of revenue comes from taxes on gasoline and vehicle registration. Other sources of revenue includes Road Millage, Township, State and Federal Funding. Currently Road Commissions across the State of Michigan, Dickinson County included, are facing a funding crisis due to the drop in fuel consumption and an increase in the cost of day to day operations.
